Personalisation sounds good but what does it mean and how do we know if we are getting it right? This is where ‘Making it Real’ comes in. Making it Real was designed as a tool by which we can measure our progress in building the adult social care system that people want. It's a national scheme devised by a voluntary organisation calledThink Local Act Personal.
Grouped into six themes, the Making it Real ideal comprises 26 ‘I’ statements that imagine what we might say if we were happy with our social services. Examples of an ‘I’ statement would be: “I am in control of planning my care and support”, and: “I know where to get information about what is going on in my community.” Take a look at the full list of 26 ‘I’ statements.
Shropshire Adult Services can use the 26 ‘I’ statements to gauge whether or not we're succeeding in helping people to live long, independent and productive lives. In 2013, we conducted a small survey to find out how people rated their experience as defined by the ‘I’ statements. The results of that study enabled us to prioritise our top three themes where we should improve services. Those themes are:
